Summary: Excellent Introduction
Comment: Robin Osborne's Greece in the Making is a generally excellent, albeit somewhat advanced, introduction to Greek history. The book is well written and clearly organized, but I would caution that it might be a bit difficult and off-putting for those without a basic knowledge of the subject matter. A few topics are introduced in a manner that suggests Osborne believes his readers already know what he is talking about.

There are also some lengthy charts on matters such as when coinage was introduced in various cities which make the book slow going at places. On the positive side there are plenty of maps, photos and excerpts from literary works and inscriptions.

Summary: A good introduction
Comment: A good introduction to the Greek world. I like the balance between detail and general views of the making of the Greek culture. Maybe a different organization of the book would have helped, but at the end it is more a matter of taste if the info is there and is delivered clearly.

Editorial Reviews:

The archaic Greek world was the world in which Homer's Iliad and Odyssey were composed, in which the Doric and Ionic orders of architecture were invented, in which athletic competition first became a cultural event and in which democracy was invented.

Archaic Greece is also a period of prehistory. No Greek writer ever attempted to describe or analyze the events of his own lifetime or of the immediate past until Herodotos and Thucydides. Our knowledge of Greece before 479 BC is dependent on the stories which the later Greeks told about their past and the indirect testimony of the material and poetic monuments of the archaic age.

Greece Under Construction shows how we can write the history of this period, and the insights which can be gained by doing so for our understanding of later periods of history. It goes beyond tradition and exploits the literature, art, and archaeology of the period. Richly illustrated, this book makes much information readily accessible and puts the reader in touch with the latest scholarship on the subject.
