Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: An accurate and moving book Comment: Contrary to the view of a reader supposedly from Macedonia, there are no factual errors in Children of the Bird Goddess, although I am sure there are some people from "Greek" Macedonia who would like to believe so. I challenge this person to say what those supposed errors are, rather than just make unsubstantiated allegations. Children of the Bird Goddess is an accurate and very moving autobiography full of personal and historical details that reveal what life was like during the period of Turkish domination and the even more brutal Greek occupation and colonization of Aegean Macedonia, now known as northern Greece. It gives a Macedonian womens' perspective on life, family, politics and war under dehumanizing Greek rule. Kita weaves, as only a mother can, the story of her family as they strive to overcome wars, persecution, and prejudice, as well as cultural superstitions and mountain village ways. This book uncoverd the background and meaning to many aspects of Macedonian family life which I have observed and wondered about. I found my head nodding as I read while lightbulbs turned on in my mind. A detailed map of the village region would have been helpful since most villages are too small to be placed on a modern map. This book is a must to someone needing insight into Macedonian culture and politics from the homefront viewpoint.
